11/18/2007 TURKEY WITH DOUG Our favorite bluesman is back in Southern California and we must confess that we missed him badly. Thankfully our guitar hero will be close to home until February – a happy fact indeed. (This will be Dubb's first Thanksgiving holiday at home with the familly in four years – news that has to have Rufus' tail at full wag. ) A score of SoCal Dubbheads caught Dubb and the Doola Devils tonight at Café Boogaloo and it was a party! Regular readers have heard this before but it is worth repeating once again: the Dubb-Denny-Dave incarnation of the Doola Devils has to be one of the best bands to have ever walked the planet. The three Ds were simply incredible tonight.

After hefting his dazzling (but not welterweight) Nationals on several trips around the globe, ol' Dubb has laid them down temporarily in favor of his easier-on-the-back-muscles Taylors. Now we're great fans of National Guitars of all flavors and can name all of Dubb's splendid specimens from memory... but we must say the Taylors are a refreshing change. Doug's slide work on his Taylor 12 string is just extraordinary. You owe it to yourself to catch "Dubb on Taylor" while his muse is so inclined.

8/28/2007 A NOTE TO DUBBHEADS FROM THE SIDEMAN We've received this note from Denny:

Lawrence and I just got back into town and have been invited to fill a last minute opening at the COFFEE JUNCTION, in Tarzana, on Friday, August 31st. We happen to have the night open, and decided "What the heck, we'll do it!". The COFFEE JUNCTION is an adorable intimate coffee house that has supported local music, on and off, over the past 15 years. It is located at 19221 Ventura Blvd, Tarzana, CA. 91356. We go on at 8:00pm, and the show is FREE. That's right, no cover (Hey, we just got back from vacation, we're in a really good mood!!!)!!  So, we hope you can come by, listen, hang out, and get your buzz on!!!
Best,
Denny
p.s. I got my myspace site up finally!

Sounds like a great time!! See ya there!

8/21/2007 NEW RELEASES FROM THE ATTIC
Our favorite bluesman once fronted a hot electric blues band. Live recordings from 1991 are now available for download. Both Volume 1 and Volume 2 are "must have" albums which capture the excitement The Doug MacLeod Band was known for. You have to check these out!

8/20/2007 BLUES BOOGALOO BIRTHDAY SoCal DubbHeads gathered at their unofficial clubhouse, Café Boogaloo, to wish Dubb bon voyage and to tie the bow on the weekend-long celebration of Dr. Groove's birthday. It was a party (we know this because there was cake). Steve provided the drive for the Devils, Denny was outrageous on his Style M and Dubb was simply smokin' on his newest tri-cone "Spoon". In a night filled with highlights, perhaps the biggest was the christening of two new DubbHeads: Dr. Earl Cox from Chapel Hill and points west and David Loughnan of Queensland, Australia. Welcome guys... and keep on bluesin'.

BOOGALOO
This is it guys! Dubb's last appearance in Southern California until October. You can get your Dubb fix at a terrific venue tonight in Hermosa Beach. If you haven't seen Doug and the Doola Devils at Café Boogaloo we urge you to check the place out tonight. It will be a great way to cap off your summer... and you'll see most all of the founding DubbHeads there.

8/17/2007 HAPPY GROOVE DAY DubbHead founding member Dr. Groove turned another year older today. (Happy Day, Groove!!) The happy event was celebrated at Lucille's Long Beach with Dubb. What could be better? How 'bout a Dubb weekend? Dubb and Denny will rock Lucille's Tustin tomorrow night. Our favorite bluesman leaves for Washington state next week and then heads off to Europe. Before that, though, Dubb and the Doola Devils will tear down Café Boogaloo on Sunday. If you're a SoCal Dubbhead, be there to catch Dubb before he leaves town – and to wish the Groovster a happy birthday. If you're a DubbHead in Europe, your favorite bluesman is on his way back to see you!

8/16/2007 A BLAST FROM THE PAST Loyal DubbHeads know that our favorite bluesman once headed a very hot electric blues band called, not surprisingly, The Doug MacLeod Band. Recordings from Dubb's Stratocaster era are very difficult to come by since Stomp and Volt, the record labels that had the masters, are long gone. If you haven't heard Electric Dubb we have great news! Your wait will soon be over. Live recordings of the Doug MacLeod Band will soon be available for download. We'll keep you posted as we learn more.

8/5/2007 BOOGALOO Doug's last SoCal date before he wings off to Missouri is tonight at Café Boogaloo in Hermosa Beach. It's summer on the Strand with our favorite bluesman. What could be more fun? DubbHeads will be congregating at our usual table. Stop by! Beach insiders note: Tonight is the third of three Summer Sunset Concerts on the beach in Hermosa, as well as the last day of the International Surf Festival. Expect a crowd at the Boogaloo afterwards.

8/1/2007 CALENDAR NOTES All of you SoCal DubbHeads, please take note: The location of the August 18th Lucille's performance has been changed from Laguna Hills to Tustin. The calendar is correct, so if you have any doubts, check it out. Doug and Denny are at Lucille's Long Beach next Friday and Doug returns to Miramonte Winery on Saturday. And don't miss Café Boogaloo on Sunday 8/5.

7/29/2007 DID WE MENTION PIE? There was a ton of great food at yesterday's Blues Barbeque, including fine barbecue from Ernie King and some really terrific home grown tomatos and other goodies too plentiful to mention. We have to take a moment, however, to give a special tribute to Nita Bee of Nita Bee's Tastys. Nita is well known to attendees of the blues and jazz festivals in Monterey. Nita supplied ten sweet potato pies (plain and Jamaican) and a peach cobbler that was generaly acknowledged to be "Freaking Awesome!" Ordering was a piece of cake (no pun intended) and Nita is a sweetheart to deal with. She also makes outrageous cookies. Check out her website for your next party -- and don't hesitate to call her to discuss your order.

7/29/2007 CASA DE GROOVE!! The scene of last year's DubbHead's, Phil Matuzic's Casa de Groove, was the location of the Third Annual Blues Barbeque last night. Sadly we couldn't make it an official DubbHeads event (fire marshalls, et al) but many DubbHeads were prowling the event. A truly terrific time was had by all. Lots of guest musicians, professional and amateur, contributed to the vibe. And there was pie. And tri-tip. And ribs. And... well you get the idea.
Thanks go out to Phil and everyone else who made this happen. We'll have a page of images from the party available shortly.

7/23/2007 SHE BOOGIES AT CAFÉ BOOGALOO!! Dubb and the Doola Devils rocked Café Boogaloo last night!! Summer in Hermosa Beach always means a packed house at the Boogaloo. Last night was a "Sunset Concert" on the strand with Eric Burden. Many folks decided they had to get out of that place and came to the Boogaloo to hear some real blues. One was a young thing nicknamed (I kid you not) Tee-tee who did her damnedest to live up to Doug's personalized version of She Boogyn'. The Devils return to the Boogaloo next Sunday. Don't miss it!
line7/21/2007 FRET HOUSE & BOOGALOO!! As you loyal DubbHeads know, our favorite bluesman has made it back from down under (and the midwest) where we understand `Ol' Dubb left 'em speachless at every turn. Dubb does a solo gig tonight at The Fret House in Covina. DubbHeads will remember this cool venue from the Captured Alive DVD. Seating will be limited so make sure you call for tickets. Tomorrow night (Sunday 7/22) Dubb returns to Café Boogaloo with the Doola Devils. Be there!

4/21/2007 HAPPY BIRTHDAY DUBB Our favorite bluesman celebrates his 61st birthday with Dubbheads from Downunder today. If you're anywhere near Geraldton, Western Australia, be sure to stop by the Batavia Blues and Roots Festival and wish our man a great day. We assure you you'll love the music! Dubbheads Trivia: The festival is named for the Batavia, A Dutch East India Company ship that was wrecked on a reef in the nearby Houtman Abrolhos islands during a mutiny in 1629.line

4/18/2007 THE GRILL IS GONE!!! "If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have no luck at all" sang Albert King in "Born Under a Bad Sign". While the original Booker T. Jones and William Bell tune was penned four decades ago, our friend Vance from New Orleans can surely relate. Vance is Vance Vaucresson of the cajun-sausage-making Vaucresson family. DubbHeads who have had the pleasure of devouring a Vaucresson sausage po-boy at Jazz Fest will recognize the name immediately. To many of us, Jazz Fest would not be Jazz Fest without a Vaucresson po-boy. Sadly, the Vaucressons have been having a rough time of it since Katrina. Vance's luck took a turn from bad to worse earlier this month when someone made off with the famous Vaucresson grill. Some of us have put together a "Find the Grill" project to try to help out. DubbHeads are encouraged to pitch in.

3/29/2007 DUBB ON THE BBC!! Our favorite bluesman is a guest on the Paul Jones show on BBC Radio 2 tonight (London time). The show will be available on streaming audio from the BBC web site for the next two weeks. Tune in!!

3/22/2007 A TWO WORD REVIEW Doug's new DVD, THE BLUES IN ME, is a MUST HAVE for all DubbHeads and fans of acoustic blues. The disk contains great performances and the interviews are especially candid and insightful. You need this DVD. You need to click on this link to buy it..

3/21/2007 THE BLUES IN ME Dubb's new DVD has just landed at DubbHead Central!! We were just able to tear off the cellophane and slap it in the DVD player before heading off to work, so a full review will have to wait 'til this evening. You can check out the trailer on YouTube and, once you do that, we know you'll want to order your own copy. You can get one directly from Black and Tan here. And, as a bonus, shipping is free!
line2/26/2007 BLUESVILLE PART II DubbHeads Central has received a number of requests for the second part of Doug's interview with Bill Wax at XM Satellite Radio. In celebration of the release of the Live at XM Satellite album, we've managed to get the official DubbHeads DAT player fixed and get the final tape digitized. You can give it a listen here.

2/25/2007 BLUES IN THE FOOTHILLS If you missed Doug's Saturday show we're here to tell you that you missed a dynamite performance! The venue was The Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena, an intimate venue in the tradition of coffee houses of olde. Dubb wore his "on tour" hat and turned in two inspired sets to a standing-room-only audience. It was our favorite bluesman's last performance Stateside until... we can hardly say it... June! It was a fine, but bittersweet, night.

JEFFTURMES
2/23/2007 SIDEMAN WITH HAIR! There is an insidious rumor being circulated by a certain pun-slinging string plucker that a full head of hair prevents virtuosity on the standup bass. DubbHeads that were at Lucille's tonight will tell you that a hirsute Jeff Turmes destroyed that rumor with great aplomb. Jeff put in a fantastic performance filling in for Denny Croy last night. Jeff is also well known for his turns on saxophones and guitar, both as a session musician and fronting his own band. Check out Jeff's new CD over on his web site. Don't worry Denny, true DubbHeads will accept no substitutes!
line2/23/2007 FIRST LOOK AT THE NEW DVD! Doug's new live DVD, The Blues In Me will be out very soon. Click here to see the trailer on YouTube. We'll have more here on DubbHeads soon.

line2/20/2007 CRUISIN! The inside scoop is that staterooms on the October Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise are filling up fast. The cruise shoves off from San Diego and heads south to the Mexican Riviera on October 13th. The line up is great this year and, of course, includes our favorite bluesman. We even hear they're planning on an acoustic guitar workshop with Doug. You don't want to miss this floating blues festival. Check it out here.

2/11/2007 A NEW VENUE! Our favorite bluesman appears tonight at a new venue in Culver City, California. Boulevard Music [map], a cool music store with a concert venue, is a favorite haunt of LA area professional musicians. Doors open at 7:30PM and the show starts at 8. Tickets are $13 and if you don't already have one you should stop reading this and call 310-398-2583 right now. Go do that and come right back. We'll wait.

2/08/2007 DIGITAL-ONLY ALBUM RELEASE As we promised, exciting happenings are afoot in the land of Dubb. Today Doug released a new solo acoustic album. Titled "Live at XM Satellite", this set was recorded September 5th, 2006 in a session done for Bill Wax's "Bluesville" show on XM Satellite Radio (XM74). Recorded by engineer Quentin Roebuck using a simple two-mic setup, the tracks have the intimate, personal feel of one of Doug's live solo performances. Doug delivers some inspired renditions of some old favorites like "Old Country Road" and "A Little Sin", and introduces his recent "Welcome in Your Home". This is solo set is a great addition to the portfolio of a Blues man with an already inspiring portfolio. "Live at XM Satellite" was released today as a downloadable album on iTunes and will be available only via digital download services. (The audiophile side of your correspondent cringes a little at the thought of 128kbit compression, but the content itself is first rate.) You can learn more here. If you're like most DubbHeads, Live at XM Satellite's short, six song set will leave you hungry for more. On the flip side, the download is under six bucks, so there's no need to give up lunch to hear some fine acoustic Blues.

1/25/2007 A NOTE FROM DUBB

Hi Folks,
I'm sorry to say that I had to cancel Iva Lee's and the Cafe Boogaloo this weekend due to the fact I'll be attending the funeral of my brother in Florida. I know many of you would like to send e-mails and cards, but I'd appreciate it very much if you would kindly send along some of your good thoughts instead.

Thank you for your understanding,
Doug

1/25/2007 A SOULFUL NIGHT AT COZY'S We kept Dubbheads News silent this week as we were embargoing some very sad news. In the weeks following the New Year, our favorite bluesman had been quite worried about his brother. Sadly, Doug's brother passed away last Thursday. Ever the consummate professional, Doug put on a terrific show with David "Honeyboy" Edwards at Cozy's on Saturday (photos soon). More soulful Blues you've never heard. And to Dubb... thank you, my friend, for showing us all how a good man holds his head up. Our hearts are with you.

1/15/2007 EXCITEMENT AHEAD IN 2007 There's a great deal of excitement on the horizon from our favorite bluesman. Dubb will have a new DVD and new "Digital Only" release out very soon. More here shortly.
